Disgaea 4 Return

Disgaea 4 Return on the Playstation Vita is shaping up to look like an essential extended title to own alongside the original Playstation 3 game, now that a crazy new trailer by Nippon Ichi Software has been posted. According to our previous article, Disgaea 4 Return sees new content containing the high-leveled Peta spells along with additional characters, classes, story episodes, plus more — and now, they can be seen in motion in the new trailer down below:

We are immediately introduced to a new animated opening sequence with Valvatorez and friends along with the over-the-top action that the series is known for. Afterwards, there was some footage for the new story mode involving Valvatorez’s past with a playable Artina, and a look at the new character Nagi, whose design and special abilities are mechanic-themed. DLC from the Playstation 3 version have been shown in the trailer, including glimpses of cameo characters like Rozalin and Plenair from previous games. The graphical style appears to have made a successful transition from the home console version.

Disgaea 4 Return on Playstation Vita will be releasing in Japan at January 30, 2014. Those who pre-order the game will receive a vocal soundtrack featuring 10 tracks, called “Disgaea Vocal Song: The Best”. Nippon Ichi Software America will likely announce a Western release date at a later time, and we do hope it will be soon.

Ys: Memories of Celceta | Karna Violent Tempest

With only four days left before Ys: Memories of Celceta is released in North America for the PlayStation Vita, XSEED Games has posted a new English trailer featuring Karna, the party’s cheerful knife-wielding huntress. Those familiar with the Ys series will know she was an extremely powerful escort ally in Ys IV. She possessed the Napalm Shot attack in the Japanese version, considered one of the most powerful attacks in the game.

You can watch the video below:

The gameplay looks fast-paced and action-packed. Karna appears to be versatile in speed and offense, using maneuvering skills as well as melee and long-distance attacks. In addition to having an array of attacks, her Napalm Shot ability returns and looks like it packs a serious punch. Players who enjoy rushing at their enemies and unleashing a flurry of attacks will feel at home playing as Karna. Notably, she’s described as having a habit of “attacking first and asking questions later,” so her play style has a lot to do with her personality.

Ys: Memories of Celceta for the PlayStation Vita will be released November 26 in North America. The game will be released in Europe early next year by NIS America in partnership with XSEED Games/Marvelous USA.

inFAMOUS Second Son

During tonight’s All Access: Greatness Awaits event celebrating the launch of the Playstation 4, developer Sucker Punch revealed a new trailer for inFAMOUS Second Son featuring brand-new cutscenes, gameplay footage, locations, and Delsin’s new neon power.

During the event, the creators said this new inFAMOUS is going to be “spectacular on the PlayStation 4.” They showed off a realistic city filled with dynamic lighting and real-time weather, as well as great voice acting.

You can watch the trailer below:

As seen in the E3 2013 trailer, Delsin uses the power of fire and smoke to fight enemies and travel effortlessly around the city. Now, we see his neon powers at work as he envelops himself in neon-colored light to run quickly on walls, leap through buildings, float in midair (though it is not clear due to the quick cut to the next clip), blast projectiles, disarm foes, and ultimately unleash a big blast when surrounded. As Delsin runs, his neon power leaves a trail of afterimages, making for a very colorful light show. The presentation is incredibly stylish.

For anyone wondering what the cast of BTOOOM!‘s English-dub will be, Sentai Filmworks has posted the names on their Facebook page. Steven Foster is handling the ADR direction, and the English BTOOOM! cast features plenty of recognizable actors, including Brittney Karbowski and Chris Ayres, who are fan favorites. Amazon.com is currently taking pre-orders for BTOOOM! on Blu-Ray and DVD, which will be released December 10, 2013. Right Stuf is taking pre-orders for BTOOOM! as well.

About BTOOOM! (From Sentai Filmworks’ Facebook Page)

In the blink of the mind’s eye, Ryuta Sakamoto suddenly finds himself transported from playing the hit BTOOOM! video game to being stranded on a mysterious island. He’s equipped with a day’s worth of provisions, a bag of bombs, a strange crystal embedded in his left hand, and a huge gaping hole in his memory. But it doesn’t take long to figure out what’s going on, especially after the first person Ryuta meets tries to kill him. Someone is attempting to recreate the ultra-violent BTOOOM! game in real life, and the island has been filled with an army of other unwilling players, each armed with one of the multiple variants of explosive weapons called BIM.

Fortunately, Ryuta’s an ace BTOOOM! player, but this insane version of the game has no reset switch or second lives, and there’s only one way off the island: kill seven other people before they can kill you! Can Ryuta repurpose his game-based skills fast enough to survive this ultimate battle royale?

Nobuo Uematsu

On October 29, 2013, I went to the University of California, Los Angeles, for a guest signing and panel event that featured Nobuo Uematsu and his band The Earthbound Papas, courtesy of Babel Entertainment. The UCLA Japanese Animation Club hosted the event, and the UCLA Video Game Orchestra and Choir performed for the guests of honor. Before the event, I was able to catch an interview with the legendary composer responsible for many cherished Final Fantasy games, as well as Lost Odyssey, The Last Story, and many others. I was guided to a small classroom, where Mr. Uematsu sat next to his translator. The atmosphere in the room felt very calm and inviting.

After some small greetings and introductions, I asked Mr. Uematsu some questions regarding the naming of his recent band and what his plans were for music and video games performing with The Earthbound Papas. Questions ranged from curiosities, such as his favorite game from among his body of work and which band members grew up playing his games as children, to what plans he has for recording video game music in the future. During our conversation, Mr. Uematsu asked me a question himself, which I gave a flattering but nonetheless honest response to. Overall, it was a very relaxed interview session with some friendly chatter.

You can watch the full interview below. Captions are provided in case the audio is indiscernible.

It was an exciting moment to meet the man responsible for countless pieces of music that made many of our favorite Final Fantasy games, among many others, so memorable. I hope you’ll enjoy the video interview with Mr. Uematsu. Please be sure to check out more of our video content on YouTube—we plan to deliver more exciting videos in the future.

Also, be sure to visit Babel Entertainment for any news on live shows featuring The Earthbound Papas, as well as other musicians who may be playing soon near you.

Special thanks to our Quality Control Manager, Oscar Tong, for his continuous support, critiques, and his recommending me to write this article, and to our YouTube Manager, Chris Stollings, for helping me upload the video, plus continuously adding content to the oprainfall YouTube page. Additional thanks goes to Masha Lepire from the Video Game Orchestra Choir, Meagan Yip from the UCLA Japanese Animation Club, and Babel Entertainment for making all this possible.

UPDATE: I especially want to thank Ricky Rowland for his liaison work to bring Babel Entertainment staff and the respective press members together. I sincerely apologize for not recognizing him sooner.

Hyper Light Drifter | Drifter vs. Monsters

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Heart Machine after its successful crowdfunding campaign for Hyper Light Drifter. Two days ago, they posted a combat video for their new game. Much like the original trailer that debuted on Kickstarter, this combat video shows off the game’s beautifully animated character sprites and stage design in action. However, the new video focuses on battling enemies in a single level as opposed to a variety of stages.

The video demonstrates ways you can battle your enemies, like slashing through them with combos, shooting them with multiple firearms, and zipping to safety by dashing. There are a variety of enemy types, which all come in various sizes with individual characteristics. You can watch the video below:

In the trailer’s description, lead designer Alex Preston explains the game is still in its pre-alpha phase, which is surprising at a glance, since the game already appears to play well, and the video demonstrates its fluid design with finesse. But if the developers consider what we see far from complete, then fans and backers can anticipate the completed product will look even better.

Heart Machine expects to release Hyper Light Drifter mid-fall 2014 for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, OUYA, and Wii U. You can pre-order your copy of the game for your platform of choice via PayPal by visiting Heart Machine’s website.

If you also pitch in money for Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, which is still collecting funds via PayPal, you can have exclusive access to Hyper Light Drifter crossover content in Half-Genie Hero upon release.

Super Time Force

During their presence at Double Fine and iam8bit’s Day of the Devs event at San Francisco, Capybara Games released a new trailer for their hotly anticipated Super Time Force. Super Time Force is a run-and-gun action game displaying a quirky sense of humor and a “veritable storm of fecal-storm of hot violence” featuring explosive 2D action, time-manipulating mechanics, charmingly hand-drawn illustrations, and more.

You can watch the trailer below:

In Super Time Force, your characters are known as compounds from letters A to D, containing various abilities. Compound A lets you fire explosive rounds to destroy all that’s in your way, and Compound B allows you to guard yourself from enemy fire and volley bullets back at them. Compound C lets you charge and fire your weapons, and Compound D stands for Dinosaur, which lets you play as a skateboarding dinosaur wearing sunglasses.

The “Time-Out” feature allows you to stop and rewind time in the middle of an action as well as duplicate your characters by numbers. By taking damage, you can freeze time to select a different character before you rewind, and then control a completely new character as you team up with the character you selected prior to taking damage.

Super Time Force is expected to release on Xbox Live Arcade later this year. It is unclear at the moment if the game will land on other platforms in the future.

While Day of the Devs has passed, members of the team behind  Super Time Force will be present at GamerCamp 2013 in Toronto. Be sure to check out Capybara Game’s webpage, where you can learn more about their game.

Square Enix has posted a new batch of screenshots for the upcoming Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. The screenshots depict in-game action and cutscenes from both the original Final Fantasy X and its sequel, Final Fantasy X-2.

You can take a look at the screenshots below:

Anybody who has not played the original Final Fantasy X or Final Fantasy X-2 on the PlayStation 2 will not want to miss out on this HD release, as they are not only memorable games, but are also two of the last great Final Fantasy games produced by Hironobu Sakaguchi. While it’s arguable enough to say any entry is indeed “the greatest,” Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster will certainly take a lot of fans back down memory lane in high definition.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster for the PS3 and Vita will be released in Japan December 26th, followed by a spring 2014 release in North America and Europe. The PlayStation 3 version will contain both Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 on one disc, while the Vita version will sell both games separately, although a twin Pack for Vita is due later in Japan. Square Enix has not yet announced this version for the West.

Fairy Fencer F | oprainfall

While Fairy Fencer F on the PlayStation 3 has been available in Japan since October 10, Compile Heart announced on their webpage that a trial version of the game will be released at October 31. In the demo, you will play as the protagonist, Fang, and experience various cutscenes for the main story, and battle against foes with Harler and Pipin in your party.

You can view the thumbnails below to get a look at Fang, Harler, and Pipin respectively:

Fairy Fencer F | Fang Fairy Fencer F | Harler Fairy Fencer F | Pipin

The demo will also emphasize the game’s weapon upgrading system, which sounds like the “Fairize” feature, in which you merge your weapon, or Fury, with the Fairies that are lying dormant inside them to awaken their full potential.

Since there hasn’t been any word from Western publishers expressing interest to localize Fairy Fencer F or bring the game overseas, having access to the Japanese demo on PS3 without any region-locking difficulty is a start for anybody who wants to give the game a try. Knowing that this game was developed by the Hyperdimension Neptunia team, and scored by Nobuo Uematsu’s band, The Earthbound Papas, the star power in the game makes playing it sound very exciting.

Hopefully, by having access to the demo, we can see a chance for this game to see a Western localization.

Resident Evil Revelations

Announced on the Capcom-Unity blog, Resident Evil: Revelations for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D for Nintendo 3DS will be sold for half their retail prices in celebration of the Halloween season. The discount is for the eShop versions only, and if you either have enough memory space for your systems or own a big enough memory drive, you will want to take advantage of this sale — especially if you have not played Resident Evil: Revelations yet.

The permanent-save feature in Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D undoubtedly put a damper on a lot of fans, and Capcom’s defending the decision has not helped the slightest; though the price drop does look pretty convincing to those who are willing to try it. Fortunately, however, Revelations does not share that same problem Mercenaries has, and it has proved to be fun and actually scary. If anyone is on the fence in trying it out, a free demo is available for both systems on the eShop.

  • Resident Evil: Revelations (Wii U) – $19.99 (was $39.99)
  • Resident Evil: Revelations  (3DS) – $9.99 (was $19.99)
  • Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D (3DS) – $9.99 (was $19.99)

Whether you plan to celebrate Halloween with your friends and family, or indulge in the festivities on your own, there’s always a Resident Evil game somewhere to help you get your horror fix. Hopefully this deal will help you get your chills and thrills.

So, will you be taking advantage of this sale? Leave a comment below!

Following several trailers and videos of gameplay footage, which featured brief animated segments and artwork drawn by Tony Taka and Enami Katsumi, a new video for Exstetra featuring a full animated opening has been posted. The anime sequence is as trope-filled as it can get with the presentation of confessional meetings, magical transformations, frilly costumes, blonde tsunderes, and bishounen-men wearing glasses and all. The game uses a theme song by ClariS and will feature music by Kingdom Hearts and Xenoblade Chronicles composer Yoko Shimomura.

You can watch the video below:

Exstetra involves a modern-day Tokyo on the brink of destruction as it faces a strange phenomena: merging with another world filled with monsters and magic. As the amnesiac Ryoma, you will have the ability to awaken people’s powers by kissing them, transforming them into Prisma Knights who will enter into combat against monsters and prevent Tokyo from merging together with this new world even further.

Exstetra will release in Japan for Nintendo 3DS and Playstation Vita systems on November 17th of this year. We certainly hope there will be plans for the game to see an overseas release. More to come as the release date draws closer.

Bayonetta: Bloody Fate logo

The official Bayonetta: Bloody Fate website has posted a 90-second trailer for Bayonetta‘s theatrical outing. The film was announced last month at Tokyo Game Show 2013 and is due in theaters later next month. The trailer features the song “Night, I Stand” by mai, as well as some familiar tracks from the original game.

Bayonetta: Bloody Fate is produced by SEGA and Gonzo and is directed by Fuminori Kizaki of Afro Samurai and X-Men anime fame. The film’s spoken language is Japanese; it will feature the voices of Atsuko Tanaka, Mie Sonozaki, Daisuke Namikawa, Miyuki Sawashiro, Tesshô Genda, Wataru Takagi, and Norio Wakamoto.

From watching the trailer, it’s easy to see the film’s attractive features. The stylized artwork of the original game translates into a sleek-looking anime. Those who have played Bayonetta will immediately recognize key moments from the game, although character placement appears entirely different. While it’s unclear whether the film will take a grittier and more serious direction than the game, we can definitely anticipate entertaining action scenes from it.

In Japan, the film will play in 10 select theaters. It will begin its two-week run November 23rd, 2013.

Filled to the brim with non-stop deluges of comically stylish action-violence and gore, Team Ninja and comcept’s collaborative Ninja Gaiden game, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, introduces some intense gameplay action in the new teaser released by Tecmo Koei Europe. While only 30 seconds long, the teaser trailer demonstrates the number of ways that you will dispatch of your zombie foes as you launch aggressive assaults and pull off campy and over-the-top finishers to hack them apart.

The trailer is fast and furious, and it makes the game look ridiculously fun as it is to watch. You can view the trailer below:

Senran Kagura Burst | oprainfall

Following  XSEED’s announcement that they are bringing Senran Kagura Burst to the Nintendo 3DS eShop, the publisher has finally revealed on Facebook that the game will have a North American release this November. XSEED has yet to officially announce the final release date, but we can assuredly anticipate the game’s digital arrival sometime next month.

In terms of memory, Senran Kagura Burst has been noted to be “very big on the size,” but it is expected to be less than 2 GB. The game contains both the original Senran Kagura game and the Burst sequel, so those expecting to get it upon arrival should consider getting a bigger SD Card for this game.

Senran Kagura Burst will be released with its Japanese audio intact and will see no form of censorship whatsoever. As North American audiences will be acquiring the game through the eShop, European audiences will be receiving both physical  and digital copies under Zen United’s publication.

Here is the debut trailer:

To learn more about Senran Kagura Burst and to continue to support the series, please visit our friends at Senran International Academy, who are part of the oprainfall Campaign Hub. They’ve worked incredibly hard pushing for Senran Kagura‘s localization.

Also be on the lookout for Senran Kagura’s manga adaptation that is due out in North America later this year, and be sure to check out XSEED on Facebook and Twitter to follow up on the other offerings they have in store.
